Margus Kontus “Vertigo”

Margus Kontus’s exhibition "Vertigo" opened at Victoria Olt Gallery in Tallinn’s Old Town, running from June 28 to August 27 2023. The exhibition featured detailed acrylic paintings, meticulously created dot by dot, reflecting the disorienting pace of modern life. Inspired by the sensation of vertigo, the works explored feelings of imbalance and instability, metaphorically addressing the overwhelming speed of contemporary society.

Kontus, a graduate of the Estonian Academy of Arts, often focused on themes of magnetism and unseen forces, bringing them to life through his art. In "Vertigo," he likened the dizzying feeling to a global symptom—comparable to noise we create ourselves—impeding our ability to see things clearly. This concept resonated with his broader body of work, which frequently explored the interplay between the visible and invisible worlds.

Known for his magnetype technique, Kontus's art aimed to create meditative experiences, slowing down perception in a world where everything moves fast. His unique style allowed the viewer to focus on each intricate detail, encouraging reflection amidst the chaotic pace of life.

Margus Kontus is an Estonian artist known for his straightforward and bold approach to art. His works focus on themes of mental health, vulnerability, and human emotions, often reflecting personal struggles and societal issues. Kontus uses a variety of mediums, including painting and sculpture, to create impactful, sometimes dark, pieces that engage with the raw realities of life. His style is marked by expressive, often rough techniques, which emphasize the intensity of the emotions he portrays. Kontus’s work has gained recognition for its honesty and emotional depth.
