In Hindu mythology, Kali is a fierce and powerful goddess, embodying time, change, destruction, and liberation. Her origins are tied to a great battle between the gods and the demon Raktabija, whose blood birthed new demons each time it touched the earth.
To end the slaughter, the goddess Durga summoned Kali from her own brow. Roaring into battle, Kali’s fury was unmatched. She destroyed Raktabija’s army and drank his blood before it could spill, ensuring no more demons could rise. But her rage only grew, and she rampaged across the battlefield, destroying everything in her path.
Fearing her power would consume the world, Shiva lay down among the corpses. When Kali stepped on him, she realized what she had done, and her tongue froze in shock and shame. This moment stilled her fury, restoring balance. Kali’s story reflects the raw, untamed force of destruction, but also the necessity of that force in clearing the way for renewal.
