In the mythology of the Wotjobaluk people of south-eastern Australia, Gnowee is the solar goddess who once lived on Earth. In the Dreamtime, the world was plunged in darkness, and people moved through the night with only fire to guide them. Gnowee had a young son whom she loved dearly, but one day he wandered away while she was out gathering food.
Unable to find him, Gnowee began to search far and wide, walking endlessly across the land with her burning torch. She searched in every direction, but the darkness made her task impossible. Eventually, she climbed into the sky so she could see farther, carrying her blazing light with her. From there she continued her search, moving across the heavens each day.
Her torch became the sun, and her path across the sky brings daylight to the world. Though she never stops looking for her son, her journey ensures that light and warmth return each day, a reminder of her eternal search and her love that never fades.
